New mural coming to St Mary's Butts High Street Heritage Action Zone

Reading High Street Heritage Action Zone has commissioned local artists Commando Jugendstil to paint a large mural in the HSHAZ St Mary’s Butts conservation area that celebrates the history and community of the area.

Titled ‘The Market Tree’ the mural will represent the area’s heritage using characters and symbols chosen via community engagement. The community can get involved with painting the mural alongside the artists until the end of March. Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday until 24 March, members of the public are invited to don their painting clothes and join Commando Jugendstil in Broad St Mall 11am – 5pm  in Unit 24 (opposite entrance to TK Maxx) and help paint the semi-permanent mural that will installed on the SSE Substation building in St Mary’s Butts (opposite Reading Minster).

The semi-permanent mural commission forms part of the legacy of a four year HSHAZ programme that started in 2020 and has seen community engagement, cultural activity and public improvement work across three conservation areas in Reading. HSHAZ is funded by Historic England with match funding from Reading Council.
