Rediscovering Our Forgotten Heritage

Heritage Open Days 2023

Sun 10 Sep, 10:00-17:00

For our 2023 Heritage Open Day, Junction Arch Heritage & Arts (JAHA) will be hosting an exhibition of the work of heritage photographer Matt Emmett at the iconic Grade II Listed Junction Arch at Cemetery Junction in Reading.

Matt Emmett is a former Heritage Open Days photographer, whose awards include Architectural Photographer of the Year 2016, Historic Photographer of the Year 2017 and the Visual Art Open in 2021. The exhibition will take us on a journey of discovery through ruins and forgotten heritage across the UK and the European mainland.

Many of the subjects of Matt’s work have since been lost, but his photographs have preserved them for us and future generations. In his own words, "The more ways we cut ties with the past the more we diminish our future. Even if the only way we preserve the memory of a building is through images then that is worth something."

The Cemetery Junction Arch is a fitting venue for Matt’s exhibition as it is currently vacant and at serious risk. JAHA are finalising plans to repurpose the building as a vibrant space for the local community, hosting heritage and art exhibitions as well as talks, classes and more.
