Black History Month in Reading

Black History Month was first celebrated in England in October 1987, during the African Jubilee Year, to promote racial harmony in London. Since then, it has expanded across the entire country, embracing and recognising the contributions and traditions of diverse Black communities.

In Reading, the heritage of Black communities is rich and multifaceted. From early African and Caribbean settlers contributing to the town’s cultural and economic life to contemporary achievements in business, academia, and the arts, Black residents have shaped Reading’s identity.
